Type Locality and Naming

Basins offshore NE Zhejiang. The type section is in the Longjing No. 1 well located at the continental shelf of East China Sea in Jiangsu Province. It was named and surveyed by Shanghai Comprehensive Marine Geological Party, Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1981. Geographical coordinates of the type section: 30°10′10″N, 126°05′07″E (GPS).


Lithology and Thickness

It is characterized by the interbedded strata of grey mudstones and greyish-white sandstones, intercalated with brown coals layers. The thickness is 200 to 300 m in Taibei depression and over 600 m in Zhedong depression.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Santan Fm is in unconformable contact with the underlying Liulang Fm.

Upper contact

The Santan Fm is in conformable contact with the overlying Donghai Gr.

Regional extent

The Santan Fm is distributed in the continental shelf of East China Sea.

Fossils

Sporopollen assemblage Graminidites- Persicariopollis- Polypodiaceaesporites. The pollens of herbaceous plants are overwhelming the pollens of woody plants. Calcareous nannofossils, including Discoaster brouweri, Reticulofenestra pseudoumbilical, and Sphenolithus abies. Foraminifera, including Globigerinoides obliquus, Operculina complanate, Pseudorotalia yabei, Asterorotalia multispinosa. Ostracodes and bivalves are also found in this formation.
